SATURDAY 9th APRIL 2011


Official Opening

11.00 Skerries Mills– Period Music & Poetry; DIT poster presentation to 1911 Group

 

Guided Historical Walks

12.00 An archaeological focus to walk starting at Skerries Mills via Strand Street and Church St – Brendan Grimes (Skerries Historical Society)

14.00 A guided walk incorporating the Viking Town, the medieval town and harbour history, meet on North Beach (near the cormorant sculpture) – Niall Roycroft (Skerries Historical Society)

16.00 A guided walk featuring the history of the graveyard and grave stones, the development of the road network, the haven and mill stream. Meet at entrance to Holmpatrick graveyard – Niall Roycroft

 

Self-Guided Tours around Town Centre (map guides available in shops and to download)

14.00-15.30   Visit a number of points of historical interest around the town and learn about the trades in Skerries in 1911, children’s toys and games, suffragette campaign, the street lighting debate, the opening of the library.

 

Cricket Match; Gentlemen V Farmers

15.00 Town Centre Park (near the tennis courts). Period refreshments will be served.

 

Photo and Mapping Exhibition

10.00-16.30 Skerries Mills

 

Re-enactment of Lighting of Skerries debate  1911 (dramatised)

10.30-16.30 Open Day at Skerries Mills, free unguided tour; photo and mapping exhibition

 

The Harbour Experience

Frosties Swim

12.00 All-year round swimmers, The Frosties, take the plunge in period costume using traditional bathing changing box  - The Captain’s, Red Island

 

Community Picnic

12.30 -14.00 All welcome to picnic at Martello Tower, Red Island. Period dress desirable, bring your own picnic!

 

The Colleen Bawn – 1911

13.30 – 14.00 & 15.30 -16.00, Irish silent film ‘The Colleen Bawn’ will be screened by Rockabill Film Society  with musical accompaniment provided by Ben Murray

11th12th MAY 2011

Skerries Community Choir 

The Little Theatre will be fully in 1911 atmosphere (music, costumes etc.). Note dates. This concert is one month later.

 


The weekend is being organised by Skerries 1911 Group, with the support and involvement of Skerries Historical Society.
Skerries 1911 Group is a sub-committee of Skerries Community Association.
