ADOPT-A-BEACH

A Skerries News initiative in association with Fingal Co Co and An Taisce

What is Adopt-A-Beach?

It’s a program started by Skerries News, with the help
of An Taisce, whereby volunteer families, schools,
clubs and organisations can ‘own’ a stretch of beach
for a year. They look after it and keep it litter free;
we provide the gloves, bags and support to help
them do it. All adopters, or ‘beach guardians’,
receive a Certificate of Adoption to keep.

How can I help?

If you are not one of our volunteers for 2009-2010, we still need your help. Adopters may be away and beaches can become messy overnight. If you want to help out, call in to Coastal Tiles, The Square, Skerries for official bags and gloves.
If you would like to report a litter emergency, call 849 0629 or email us and we’ll send someone out. You can also help spread the word about us. If you would like help starting it in your town, just drop us a line!

Health and Safety

Children must be supervised by an adult.

Always wear gloves or use a litter picker.

Be careful of slippery rocks and other potential hazards such as lifting objects that may be too heavy for you.

Sharp objects must be treated with extreme care.

Never handle a syringe. Call Emily or Kevin for a sharps box

Try to avoid touching your face, especially your mouth and eyes, during a clean-up.

Always wash your hands afterward.

Avoid disturbing wild animals, especially seals as they may bite.

Do not touch any containers or drums that look as if they contain hazardous substances.

If you get injured whilst on a clean up and require a first aid kit - on North Beach phone Emily or Kevin, or report to the lifeguard station if it is occupied.

Do not take risks near water and do not enter the water to collect rubbish.

Wear visible protective clothing and sun screen if needed.

Be aware of the tide.

Bear in mind your duty is not to police the beach, just to clean it. We advise you not to get into confrontation with people who drop litter.

Adopt A Beach Notes

Where to leave Bags
Please use Fingal County Council bags and leave them with the logo facing outwards. On the south beach, bags should be left beside bins. One the North Beach bags should be left by bins on the street so they are visible to passing Fingal vans. On Balbriggan Road they should be left on the path where it is safe for a Fingal van to pull in. If possible try to put food waste in the bins rather than bags as it can attract seagulls.

Where to get Fingal bags
Bags can be collected from Coastal Tiles (the tile shop near Coco C) or from Red Island Wines.

Large items
Large items that will not fit in a bin should be placed beside a bin. Please notify Fingal County Council for collection.

Gloves and Litter Pickers
If you require more gloves or pickers please collect them from Coastal Tiles or add your name to the list there.

Beach Boundaries
Please do not feel constrained by the boundaries of your beach. If your beach is clean please feel free to continue picking up litter from anywhere that needs it. Some areas generate a lot more litter than others and some beaches will be without guardians for different periods of the year. We are all on the same team.

Assistance
If you require assistance with your beach please contact Skerries News 8490629 or email editor@skerriesnews.ie. and we will send out an alert to all our beach guardians.

Duration of Guardianship
The guardianship will last for a year unless anyone wishes to be replaced sooner.
